As an extension of my pinhole photography project, To live here., I started thinking about how I might incorporate color into the landscape. I had been experimenting with digital colorization and hand-coloring toward the end of the project, but I wasn’t thrilled with the results. Then, I circled back to the lumen printing projects that I put aside. I knew I could create color that satisfied me by using silver gelatin photo papers — I had a working palette with the papers I had on hand already. I decided to experiment with putting photo paper inside old cameras to record images directly onto the paper, creating paper negatives. Using a lens allowed me to create in-camera lumen prints. In order to preserve the color of the paper, I had to use my scanner to “fix” the images. After scanning, I inverted the image to a positive in Photoshop which yielded a new color palette. Here are the results of my first few experiments. Stay tuned for more!
