Experimental work. (2025 — ongoing)
While documenting objects via the cyanotype photographic process in my project, Holding., I discovered that I was more interested in the changing blues of the background rather than the objects themselves. This is a pattern in my work that has happened before — while creating lumen prints (click archive menu for reference.) Before I dismissed everything in an “oh no, here we go again, fashion”, I spent some time considering that this impulse to remove the object may be an important piece to my work.
At first I eliminated the object altogether while still utilizing the cyanotype process. I began thinking about the color blue which runs through my work. Then I started thinking about removing the object digitally on the images from Holding. as I was starting to investigate digital photography processes more.

At the time, I was also practicing with the digital camera. I happened to photograph a set of objects and collaged them into a grid format. Again, what was most interesting to me, in the results, was the way the digital camera’s sensor emitted its own colored ground, so to say, based off of each object when placed on a white background. So, in Photoshop, I used the remove tool to remove the objects.

Following this impulse to remove the objects, I began to circle back on the idea that I’m working on the edge of photography and painting — my interest in color, the essence, the grounds. Through this process, I’m now investigating how the digital comes into the equation, and ultimately what photography is and what it is becoming.
